তুরস্কে কয়েক বছর ধরেই নিরপেক্ষ সাংবাদিকদের ওপর নিপীড়ন চলছে। প্রথাগত বড় বড় গণমাধ্যমগুলো পুরোপুরি চলে গেছে রাষ্ট্রের দখলে। এত কিছুর পরও সাম্প্রতিক স্থানীয় নির্বাচনে ভরাডুবির শিকার হয়েছে প্রেসিডেন্ট রিসেপ তাইয়েপ এরদোয়ানের দল। আর অবাধ তথ্যের যোগান এবং বিজয়ী বিরোধী দলের পক্ষে জনমত গঠনের শক্তিশালী ক্ষেত্র হিসেবে আবির্ভূত হয়েছে স্থানীয় ডিজিটাল সংবাদমাধ্যম। প্রশ্ন হল, ছোট ছোট এসব ডিজিটাল মিডিয়া কীভাবে রাতারাতি এত শক্তিশালী হয়ে উঠেছে?

Led by China, Egypt, 199 Journalists Now in Prison

The Committee to Protect Journalists is out with its annual census of journalists in prison, and, as always, the report makes for grim reading. Check it out, anyway — it’s important our community knows what’s happening to our colleagues around the world. Here’s the quick and dirty: Globally, CPJ found 199 journalists in prison because of their work on December 1, 2015, a modest decline from record highs of the past three years. (There were 221 in 2014.) CPJ’s list does not include the many journalists imprisoned and released throughout the year.

Global Press Freedom Plummets to 13-Year Low

Global press freedom has continued its decline, now at its lowest point in 13 years in 2016 due to unprecedented threats to journalists and media outlets in major democracies, intensified crackdowns by authoritarian states, and moves by Russia and China to increase their influence beyond their borders, according to Freedom of the Press 2017, the latest edition of Freedom House’s annual report on media freedom worldwide.
