The subject of sexual violence remains a sensitive if not taboo subject in much of the world and often goes unreported. Watchdog journalism has started digging deeper into sexual violence, but these investigations are still few relative to the estimated number of cases worldwide. GIJN has now updated its reporting guide for this hard-to-cover subject.

The local host of the 11th Global Investigative Journalism Conference, to be held in 2019, will be chosen by GIJN member representatives during the week of the Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa. GIJN is pleased to present GIJC19 proposals for four cities: Dublin, Ireland, from the Mary Raftery Journalism Fund; Hamburg, Germany, from Netzwerk Recherche; Lima, Peru, from Instituto Prensa y Sociedad (IPYS); and Riga, Latvia, from OCCRP/Stockholm School of Economics in Riga/The Baltic Center for Investigative Journalism(Re:Baltica).
As we gather for the 11th Global Investigative Journalism Conference, this seems a good time to share again with our colleagues where the Global Investigative Journalism Network and its conferences come from. It was a simple idea at the end of the 20th century — to gather the world’s investigative journalists to share their knowledge with each other — that gave birth to GIJN, which has now grown to 182 member organizations in 77 countries.
