Winners of the seventh Global Shining Light Awards were announced at the Global Investigative Journalism Conference tonight in Johannesburg, South Africa. Top prizes went to gutsy investigations of missing funds in Iraq and extra-judicial killings in Nigeria, with citations of excellence to exposes of arms trafficking in Eastern Europe and complicity behind anti-Muslim riots in India.
The Global Investigative Journalism Network has opened the submissions for the Global Shining Light Award, a unique award which honors investigative journalism in a developing or transitioning country, done under threat, duress, or in the direst of conditions. Top winners will receive an honorary plaque, US$2,000, and a trip to the 2019 Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Hamburg to accept the award in front of hundreds of their colleagues from around the world.
Twelve investigative projects focused on 11 different countries have been selected as finalists for the eighth Global Shining Light Award, a prize that honors investigative journalism in developing or transitioning countries that was carried out under threat, duress, or dire conditions.
An investigative series out of Brazil won the Global Shining Light Award during the 7th Global Conference on Investigative Journalism in Kiev, Ukraine. “Secret Diaries,” which was prepared by the Gazeta do Povo and PRC Television last year, detailed a massive embezzlement scheme of public funds in Parana, Brazil’s government.
In October 2013, the Global Investigative Journalism Conference will again present the Global Shining Light Award, a unique award which honors investigative reporting in a developing or transitioning country, done under threat, duress, or in the direst of conditions. The winner receives an honorary plaque, US$1,000, and a free trip to the Global Conference in Rio de Janeiro.
