Global Network News: New Members, Board Leadership

Four journalism nonprofits from four countries are the latest to join the Global Investigative Journalism Network. We’re proud to say they bring GIJN’s membership to 101 groups in 45 countries. Lots of other news in the latest edition of Global Network News, GIJN’s newsletter. GIJN’s social media also continues to grow, from just 700 followers in 2012 to more than 35,000 today. And GIJN’s newly elected board held its first meeting and chose four officers to oversee the organization.

Seymour Hersh addresses GIJN Conference

Legendary investigative journalist Seymour Hersh delivered today’s keynote address at the Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Geneva, sharing details about his work on My Lai in Vietnam, Abu Graïb, and about his particular relationship with sources. Hersh then participated in a panel discussion moderated by Brant Houston, a co-founder of the Global Investigative Network and currently the Knight Chair in Investigative Reporting at the University of Illinois.

Global Conference off to great start despite travel disruptions

Hundreds of journalists from around the world gathered at the sixth Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Geneva despite the travel chaos created in Europe by a volcanic eruption in Iceland. The first day began with dynamic presentation by Robert Saviano and was followed by panels on covering the Russian oligarchy, climate change, undercover broadcast reporting and how to organize and finance investigations.

Kiev will build on past conferences

The upcoming conference in Kiev, Ukraine will expand on the work and sessions at the previous conferences.  At last year’s sixth Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Geneva, the legendary investigative journalist Seymour Hersh delivered keynote address, sharing details about his work on My Lai in Vietnam, Abu Graïb, and dealing with sources. Nonprofit Newsroom Survival Guide (part two)

Last month we wrote about survival strategies for nonprofit investigative journalism organizations. As we stressed in that story, key to succeeding in the long term is diversifying revenue. Now, GIJN’s colleagues at the Investigative News Network have put together a useful infographic on the varied sources of revenue that groups can tap. GIJN’s staff will be joining an INN day on managing nonprofit newsrooms, held at the Investigative Reporters and Editors conference on June 20 in San Antonio, Texas. Included will be sessions on fundraising, best practices, branding and membership.
