The little-known but powerful Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) system considers high stakes cases between companies and national governments, which often take years to resolve and impose extensive legal and other fees. Here, investigative reporter Claire Provost argues that we need more reporting to expose the impact this system has on our democracies.
Award-winning journalist Emilia Díaz-Struck has been named the incoming executive director of the Global Investigative Journalism Network, an association of more than 240 investigative journalism nonprofits throughout the world. Díaz-Struck will join GIJN as editor-at-large in mid-August, and then become executive director in September at the biennial conference of the network in Gothenburg, Sweden, September 19- 22.
Hey, everyone… It’s GIJN’s anniversary! Twenty years ago, a band of nonprofits came together to form a network to support investigative and data journalism around the world. This was at the second Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Copenhagen, back in 2003. Since then — thanks to you — our growth has surprised even us.
Here’s an early look at the schedule for the 2023 Global Investigative Journalism Conference, where we expect a record 2,000 journalists from more than 110 countries to join us in Gothenburg, Sweden. The conference takes place Sept. 19-22.
In his acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize, Dmitry Muratov, editor-in-chief of Russia’s leading independent media outlet, Novaya Gazeta, said: “The award today goes to the entire community of investigative journalists.” Four days later — in a webinar interview with GIJN — Muratov set out the true stakes for investigative journalists who now share that high honor.

Six outstanding investigative projects from Large Outlets have been selected as finalists for the 2023 Global Shining Light Awards (GSLA) — the prize honoring watchdog journalism in developing or transitioning countries that was carried out under threat, or in perilous conditions.
GIJN has launched the first cohort of its six-week, online Digital Threats Course, which will train 23 journalists from 20 countries cross Europe, the Middle East, the Americas, Asia and Africa.
