The next global conference is scheduled for October 2022 — in-person and in Sydney, Australia — but this will depend on the pandemic. The 2021 Global Investigative Journalism Conference, which was planned for Sydney, Australia, this year, will be held online on 3-5 November due to pandemic conditions.  Co-hosts the Global Investigative Journalism Network and the Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism and Ideas now plan to hold the in-person conference in Sydney on October 27-30, 2022.

Based on consultations with public health experts, GIJN and JNI found it unlikely that international travel will return to normal this year, or that vaccine distribution will be widespread enough to allow attendees from many countries.

This November, #GIJC21 will take place online, but in October 2022 be sure to join us for #GIJC22 in Sydney, Australia!

The Global Conference is the seminal international event in investigative journalism, featuring practical panels and workshops on the latest investigative techniques, data analysis, online research, cross-border collaboration, and more by the best journalists in the field. The conferences have trained over 8,000 reporters and resulted in the founding of investigative teams, nonprofit newsrooms, and headline-making stories around the world.

The last Global Conference, GIJC19, was held in Hamburg, Germany, in September 2019, and attracted 1,750 people from 131 countries.

This year’s online conference (#GIJC21) will feature regional programs, hands-on workshops, multiple language translation, and extensive networking opportunities. GIJN will soon announce a fellowship program to ensure that hundreds of journalists from developing and transitioning countries can attend the virtual event.

The JNI will play a key role in co-hosting the program across the Asia Pacific region, which will have a live in-person component in Sydney.
