The pressing need for good reporting during the pandemic has encouraged several funders to offer grants to journalists. In addition, offers of aid to publishers are emerging in light the growing financial pressures on small businesses.
GIJN has summarized both kinds of opportunities in our new Resource Center guide, Media Funding on the COVID-19 Pandemic.
These include the National Geographic Society’s emergency fund — with grants ranging from $1,000 to $8,000 “for local coverage of the preparation, response, and impact of this global pandemic as seen through evidence-based reporting” — and the Pulitzer Center‘s Coronavirus News Collaboration Challenge, which are open to journalists from around the world.
Others grants are more region-specific, such as the Africa-China Reporting Project which offers funds for investigating “current ground-level responses, capacity, successes/failures, shortcomings, services and collaborations in African countries, communities and organisations,” or are targeted toward specific groups, such as the International Women’s Media Foundation’s Journalism Relief Fund.
Meanwhile, initiatives out of Facebook — which includes a $100 million investment — and Internews, which has launched a rapid response fund, are more geared toward news organizations worldwide.
We’ll update this list as we hear about new opportunities. Please send us an email on hello@gijn.org to let us know about any we’re missing.
There is need to get Citizens involved with local reporters in an ongoing basis.
